Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. The holiday originated in 1882 as the Central Labor Union (of New York City) sought to create "a day off for the working citizens".
For many people, Labor Day is a "free" day off, but for those that are in civil service, like my hubby (law enforcement, military deployed overseas, firefighters, paramedics) or work shiftwork (waiters/waitresses, gas station attendants, retail salespeople, grocery store workers) even those in medical care (such as ER docs and all kinds of nurses, even therapists in some SNFs ) get no special days or holidays off unless requested. And even then, sometimes those requests are denied.
So to all those that have to work this Labor Day, hats off to you!
