I came across this post the other day about keeping your own chickens. I decided to post it here because it goes with my dream of one day owning a large plot of land and being somewhat self-sustaining on it (and along with that goes being less reliant on big business and the middleman...). Hubby has already poo-pooed down the idea of having chickens for the immediate future (we have enough pets), but it's a dream anyhow. My friend and amazing wedding photographer, Christy Whitehead, keeps chickens for show and as pets, not for eggs, but it's still cool nonetheless. And she gets great pictures out of them, too!

Before you make the decision to keep a flock of feathered friends yourself, there are a few considerations you’ll want to address before you put in an order for chicks or start building a hen house. To begin, check that chicken-keeping is legal in your area. This can be determined by a quick call to your local animal control office. They’ll let you know the rules on keeping chickens where you live (which, by the way, can vary widely from one region to the next, so what holds true in one town might not be consistent for the town next door).
