Hylands: Natural, homeopathic remedies for the entire family

I love Complementary and Alternative Medicine- that's what natural and homeopathic remedies are called in the healthcare field. The thing is, these remedies have been around for ages- longer than any medication on the US market. They've been around for centuries.

I have a friend who is a Homeopathic Practitioner in Sweden and she's a wealth of information. She and I have had so many conversations about homeopathic medications and how the right combination can be the difference between getting better almost immediately, versus not getting well at all.

The medical professional in me always questions everything. Does it REALLY work? How fast? What method? What are the side effects? And unfortunately- At what cost? I'm not saying mainstream medication doesn't have a place, I'm concerned with the alarming rate of antibiotic resistant bacterias and yeast. And then there are those of the "I'll just take a pill to fix it" attitude in regards to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity, we have a serious crisis in America.

When I had my daughter, I wanted to stay as naturally based as I could in regards to medicine. We use mainstream medications when it's warranted, but I usually go for something natural and homeopathic first. One awesome brand here in the US is Hyland's.

About Hyland's:
In 1903, the year Hyland’s was founded as a Los Angeles pharmacy, homeopathy was standard medical practice in the United States. During the first half of the century, despite the medicine’s effectiveness, cultural and political factors pushed it from the mainstream.
Throughout the decades Hyland’s never lost sight of the need for natural medicines that were strong in relieving symptoms but gentle in the way they worked. Nor did the company lose touch with the many insightful doctors and pharmacists who dispensed the medicine, or with the consumers who continued to use it and benefit from it.
As countless conventional medicines developed by others proved to produce negligible, complicated or even harmful results, the need for natural medicines that work without side effects is increasing and homeopathic medicines are moving back into the mainstream.
The active ingredients in Hyland’s homeopathic medicines work by stimulating the most effective healing force known - the body's own natural defenses - and are therefore not heavy or overpowering. The medicines are virtually free of side effects and can be taken by nearly anyone at any time, from infants to the elderly, including anyone taking prescription medications.

Their active ingredients for ALL products are listed on website, so that you can see what they place in these remedies. Something I love- TRANSPARENCY. All of their active ingredients are from the Homeopathic PharmacopÅ“ia of the United States and “HPUS” denotes these active ingredients. Also, the tablets DO contain “Lactose N.F.” as an inactive ingredient, but rest assured mamas of kiddos with Lactose intolerance and allergies, it is a pharmaceutical grade lactose. While it is formulated from cow’s milk, it is completely purified of milk proteins, making it safe for lactose intolerant and dairy allergic people, including infants and children.

Since I love this brand so much, I contacted Hyland's to see if they would be interested in The Nurse Mommy sharing their product line and providing you moms with information on safer, natural and homeopathic remedies for most common infant and child ailments.

They sent me an AWESOME package. They included most of their infant and children's lines of homeopathic remedies for me to share with you all. I've used at least half of these before I even contacted them, so rest assured, this review is most definitely from personal use over the past few years.

Hyland's Baby

Teething Tablets: These were a LIFESAVER when Nugget was teething. It seemed like every time she had a tooth coming in, they were always coming in pairs. Honestly, we used these over acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Don't worry about baby choking, either. These things literally dissolve with a drop of spit.
There were some concerns a few years ago about overdose of some of the alkaloids present in the Teething Tablets, but Hyland's has ensured their product is safe. The thing about homeopathic remedies is that the dosage is so small, it takes a LOT (like lots of bottles worth) to create any side effect.

Teething Gel: We also used the Hyland's Teething Gel when Nugget was teething. The "big brand" everyone uses, that has all those icky numbing chemicals gave her some seriously gross diapers, and honestly, you can seriously cause an overdose of benzocaine if you use it too much. Most definitely, this teething gel makes baby feel so much better and the soothing gel helps the pain of teething go away.

Tiny Cold Tablets: According to both of our pediatricians, kids get at least 1-2 colds per MONTH until they're 2. This is miserable for both baby and parents. Nugget seemed like she caught nearly every single cold, cough and virus from daycare. I'd love to be able to be a SAHM and keep her from daycare, but honestly my education cost way too much to stay home, and I love my career entirely too much. The Tiny Cold Tablets help fight off the sniffles, congestion, coughs and sneezes.

Infant Earache Drops: They say breastfed infants aren't supposed to get ear infections/ ear aches. I beg to differ. Nugget would get an ear infection almost every time she had a cold. It was so bad that the chiropractor couldn't help it drain and we ended up getting tubes put in at 7 months. But before that, these were a life saver. I was able to help relieve some of the pain, even though there was not much I could do. These are a great solution for moms who are told to just "ride it out" and "wait and see" if the fluid drains from the inner ear to the Eustachian tubes on its' own. After all, most
fluid in ears isn't an infection, and if it is, there's no way to be sure if it's viral or bacteria. (Again with the over-prescription of antibiotics). Anyhow, these are an awesome solution to avoid overmedicating baby with nasty chemicals and give baby some relief in the meantime!

Vitamin C Tablets: These are awesome! I give Nugget a multivitamin with probiotics, but when those signs of a cold or something is creeping up, I always want to give her a little extra help in fighting it off. We do that with a little bump of Vitamin C and D. These have 25mg of Vitamin C per tablet which is 55% of the recommended daily amount, melt just like the other ones, and taste great.

Cough Syrup: First and foremost about this cough syrup- it is SAFE for babies under 2. I know you all heard about the banning of cough syrups to children under the age of 6 due to multiple overdose deaths by parents. No artificial flavors, dyes or parabens. We have used this a few times when Nugget was sick, and I felt much more at ease knowing she could sleep well without hacking up a lung all night long. She likes the taste much better than the other brand of natural safe cough syrup on the market.

Diaper Ointment: I didn't know Hyland's had a diaper ointment until I received it from them in this kit. One thing I like about it, is that it is made with Calendula and Lanolin, and it has absolutely no perfumes or dyes. Now, to our vegan readers out there, sorry, but lanolin does help make baby's bottom a little smoother (and it's in nearly every nipple cream!). Unfortunately, it also has Petroleum, so if you're an exclusively cloth diapering mama, this isn't cloth friendly. However, I mostly use a hybrid system, and I bust out the disposies and the ointments when Nugget's diaper rash is really bad.

Hyland's 4 Kids (ages 2 and up)
I haven't had much exposure to the Hyland's 4Kids line, since Nugget isn't yet two years old.

Allergy Relief 4Kids: Nugget has some serious allergy issues, like her daddy and I. You'd think because we live in Arizona, that things would be better out here, but there is actually a lot of vegetation and pollen out there. I was stoked to be able to try this. In just a short week, she has had much less runny/snotty nose and less sneezing. Her daycare takes them outside twice a day, so I want her to be able to enjoy that time! These provide JUST THAT. According to Hyland's these are best for: Relief of runny eyes and nose symptoms of allergy from pollen, ragweed, grasses, mold and animal dander.

Sniffles 'n Sneezes 4Kids: This is the bigger kid version of the Tiny Cold Tablets for babies. It works on the uncomfortable symptoms of the common cold - from sneezing and sore throat to runny eyes, runny nose and headache.  Sniffles 'n Sneezes 4 Kids is formulated especially for children ages 2-12, with an active ingredient proven to shorten the duration of colds by nearly half.

Complete FluCare 4Kids: Oh influenza. I hate thee. We had the flu run rampant in our household earlier this year, it was miserable. I didn't even THINK about looking for a homeopathic remedy to help move things along and help with the symptoms. The good thing about this is that it's natural, non-drowsy and helps with relief of fever and chills, body aches, headache, cough and congestion.

Nighttime Cold 'n Cough 4Kids: We had Nugget seen Saturday at urgent care for a cough and some serious wheezing. See, Nugget has reactive airway issues and when she starts wheezing, we always have to make sure we aren't in pneumonia territory; because, it's a serious concern and fear of mine. We don't mess with the lungs. So, I talked with the Nurse Practitioner, and she recommended Hyland's Nighttime Cold 'n Cough! I was so excited when she recommended Hyland's (instead of the stuff for kids over 6), mostly because I have some here and didn't need to BUY any! By the time Nugget laid down for sleep, she wasn't hacking like she had been throughout the day. Best of all, this has NO ARTIFICIAL DYES and tastes great.

Cold 'n Cough 4Kids: The day time version of the Cough 'n Cold. Golden. Again, no artificial colors/dyes, sugar free and tastes great. Also helps with sneezing, sore throat, and congestion.

Calms Forte' 4Kids:This is designed to help when your little is restless and just cannot get comfortable. I know I hate when there's those nights that Nugget wakes up 4-5 times (yes, she still does) and there is absolutely nothing that I can do about it. Nursing, rocking, reading a book, patting her back, sometimes nothing helps. And she yet can't tell me exactly what's bothering her and keeping her restless. Enter Calms Forte' 4Kids. This helps their body calm and relax, decreasing restlessness and wakefulness. I even know someone who gives her kids a low dose so they can focus on their school work. It's not like you're giving your kid some benedryl to knock them out! It's safe, effective and natural. Can't complain about that!

Now, I know, that's a LOT of stuff and a LOT of reading. BUT, that's just how much I LOVE this brand. Even better? Hyland's is going to be giving one lucky The Nurse Mommy reader a "Mommy Starter Remedy Kit" with all of the great products discussed above! Check back in a few days and keep an eye out on facebook/twitter for the announcement when it goes live!!!
