Baby's Brilliant iOS App for Babies and Toddlers: Engaging and Educational

We'd like to thank Baby's Brilliant for sponsoring this post.

These days, it's almost impossible for our young kiddos to avoid technology. It's invaded every single part of our lives. I know there are so many parents that avoid technology like the plague. And on the other hand, I know other parents that completely embrace it, in all its' forms. After all, I know I used to really avoid allowing Nugget play with my phone or my iPad. As a pediatric Occupational Therapist, I am completely aware of the benefits of utilizing technology as positive reinforcement or incentive to participate in an activity that might be a bit challenging or unpreferred by a child.

I just had the opportunity to check out a new iPhone app, Baby's Brilliant. With a busy three-year old on my hands, sometimes I just need a few minutes of quiet, sit down time. After all, she's a busy bee!!! Aren't they all at this age?

As a mom, I try to select educational, engaging, and entertaining Apps for my daughter to use. The apps that are strictly education-based tend to be somewhat boring and don't maintain my daughter's attention for an extended period of time, like more than 3-4 minutes. Apps that engage the kiddo and are entertaining, as well as educational, tend to hang onto their attention spans for a little bit longer, giving mom or dad a few minutes of peace and quiet to get something done- like chop up veggies for dinner, go to the bathroom in peace without discussing their toileting situation of the moment, or even just change out of that food stained clothing at 4pm that we've been wearing since breakfast (please, please tell me I'm not the only one!!!).

I love to check out new apps, so when I had the opportunity to review this new iPhone app, Baby's Brilliant, I jumped at the chance. These days, we're working on learning number recognition, counting, letter recognition, things of that sort. However, Nugget loves animals, so anything incorporating animals, learning about new animals, and even their habitats, and gives us an opportunity to talk and work on her language skills, I'm on that, too. Baby's Brilliant gives you the option of animated music videos, movies and night lights with classical music.

Here's a little bit of information about Baby's Brilliant:
From the developer: Our Story

Baby's Brilliant was founded by Ulli Coulter, a busy mother of three, who was finding it more and more difficult to find enriching and educational materials to share with her children. All the existing products had become too complicated, overstimulating them, rather than engaging and educating them. It was time for a fresh new approach, time to go back to the basics, with simpler, more enriching presentations. So, Ulli started to videotape images everywhere she went, she assembled them with gentle recordings of musical classics, and Baby's Brilliant was born!
Ulli also noticed the rapid changes in technology, and the increasing use of tablets and smart phones by children of all ages. All the existing children’s products were on DVD’s, which greatly limited the ability to watch them. She partnered with iTunes to make all her materials instantly downloadable to iPads and iPhones, with a specially designed Baby's Brilliant App, making them available, literally anytime, anywhere in the world.
As she continues to raise her three children, Ulli is constantly looking for fresh and pure images and stories to share with yours.
“ The world and everything around us is beautiful and exciting, especially for babies and young children. I am passionate and dedicated to help you introduce it to your precious ones, in a simple and playful way ”
-- Ulli Coulter --

The Baby’s Brilliant app  provides a fun and friendly environment, where your  little ones can safely explore and learn without the risk of clicking on an inappropriate YouTube search.
The playlist function makes you the director, so you can choose what your baby watches, change the order and control the screen time.

Since I wanted more interactive and engaging items for Nugget to use, I decided to download a couple of songs and one video with my three free items. There's a variety of songs and music that are available to choose from and instantly download. The app even has a "child protection" option, which is a simple mathematics question with a few options. My only dislike about this feature is that it's the exact same question, every time. So, if your kiddo is one of those that's like my bestie's daughter, Peek-a-Boo, and has a photographic memory, you'll want to turn the phone or iPad away from your kiddo when answering the question.

The items all vary in duration, and you're able to set up a playlist of exactly which items you want to play. This might even give you 5-10 minutes of uninterrupted bathroom time! WHAT?!?!? HEAVEN!

Nugget was really excited when I put on the first song for her to sing to, which was Hickory Dickory Dock. She didn't know the song prior to this, which actually surprised me! She's a big-time singer, so when she didn't sing along, I was surprised; because, I actually expected this to have been something she'd heard in preschool. She enjoyed counting with the clock at each hour, and even clapped along with the counting (like they do at her school). This is great for those 1.5-2 year olds that are just learning how to count to ten! It incorporates song and counting, with adorable animation.

The other item that was a HUGE hit was a movie, "Animals All Around". Nugget selected it; because, the image has pink flamingos. HA! I also approved, since it has just about 5 minutes of video time. She really enjoyed checking out all the different animals and their habitats. The voice-over on this video was a pleasant voice, and talked about the animals, their homes, etc. Even though it's listed as an entertainment piece, I was highly pleased with this video's educational component.

One negative critique I have for this app is that after your three freebie downloads, each item is 0.99. Being that there were at least an additional 15 items I could see myself downloading, I could totally see this App getting quite expensive, when it's all said and done.

See the two images below for the types of items you'll see when you download the App.

All in all, this app is definitely a "WORTH IT" for downloading. I love that it's educational, but still remains engaging and fun for the kiddo. Nugget says "I like that game". So, not only is it Mama approved, Pediatric OT approved, it's ALSO Nugget approved!

What are you waiting for!? Be sure you head NOW to check out the Baby's Brilliant App from the Apple App Store, it's a freebie download, and you get three free selections on your device. After that, the items are 0.99 apiece.

What's your favorite type of app to download for your kiddo? Are you a fan of educational Apps, like Baby's Brilliant? Or do you prefer items that are more entertaining?

  1. I don't currently have a toddler but I look very forward to testing out products like these in the coming future! It's very interesting how technology has progressed in even just 25 years!

  2. Kids are starting on smart devices younger and younger these days, it's definitely hard to keep them engaged, sounds like an interesting app I will let my sisters know for my nieces as I have no children. :-)

    1. I was so surprised it kept my daughter's attention for as long as it did. It's definitely a fun little app... Though, as an OT, I definitely use our technology as a reward and incentive, more than "here keep quiet" tool :)

  3. I don't have a smartphone so don't do apps. I am a big believer in fun educational games though.

    1. It makes it literally one step. You add the items you select onto a playlist, and then they can only use what is on the playlist! You're in control of content and time allowed!

  5. I love finding new apps for the kiddos. It keeps them out of my apps lol.

    1. That's the best part! I definitely am all about finding fun, safe and age appropriate apps, that keeps them engaged, but teaches them something at the same time.

    1. It's always great to even have just one or two items on there that you know are winners, and help calm down kiddos when we just need that few minutes of (silence!).

  7. Thanks for sharing this app. It's so hard to find a good game that will engage our children and teach them at the same time.

    1. That's my big thing too- there's many apps out there that are on the right track, but aren't getting the fullest in interaction out of the kids. Or the voice overs are extremely creepy sounding- which I found Baby's Brilliant has a lovely, calm voice over.

  9. This is a cute app, I currently have plenty of apps on my phone as it is for my 3 year old, I don't think she needs anymore.
